ams AG OSram has launched the global ultra-small multi-region dToF module to achieve high precision ranging

     ams AG has introduced three new dToF modules for multi-area and multi-object detection, with a wider wide field of view (FoV) and a wider detection range. dToF sensors are a key technology widely used in industrial and home or commercial automation applications. Industrial and domestic robots need cutting-edge systems to detect the environment to ensure safe operation. Emmax OSram's multi-region dToF modules TMF8820, TMF8821 and TMF8828 can divide the detection range into multiple regions to capture more quantity and higher quality information. Therefore, the "perception" of autonomous robots can be greatly improved to detect potential obstacles early. In addition, the new modules are designed to be compact and easy to integrate, providing system manufacturers with greater design flexibility.

     In addition to applications such as warehouse automation, robots are also taking on an increasing number of tasks in home applications. Special ToF systems enable these robots to move unhindered and navigate smoothly through the environment. For example, thanks to Emais Osram's new dToF module, which enables accurate distance measurements, vacuum cleaning robots can recognize objects around them and navigate around obstacles. "TMF8820, TMF8821, and TMF8828 devices accurately range multiple areas and multiple targets, providing system manufacturers with more information about the dynamics of the environment thanks to the sensors' ability to see 'the object and make the correct execution commands," said David Smith, marketing Manager, Amais OSram.

     The TMF8820 dToF module can divide the FOV Angle into 3x3 or 9 independent detection areas, TMF8821 can be divided into 4x4 or 16 independent detection areas, and TMF8828 can be divided into 8x8 or 64 independent detection areas. Through the multi-area detection, the position of the object in the sensor field Angle can be identified. These new devices feature dynamically adjustable FOV angles up to 63°, allowing customers to choose between narrow or wide FOV angles to meet specific application requirements. All three dToF modules have detection ranges between 1 cm and 5 meters.

     These modules integrate a 940 nm vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), a sensitive single-photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) sounder array matching multi-lens optics, and an on-chip microcontroller for histogram processing in the same device. With a compact size of 2.0mm x 4.6mm x 1.4mm, the module is the smallest multi-zone dToF module on the market today.
