xMEMS Unveils Sycamore: A 1mm Ultra-Thin Near-Field MEMS Micro Speaker

xMEMS Labs, a global leader in the development of piezoMEMS (piezoelectric MEMS) technology and creators of the first all-silicon micro speakers, has announced the launch of its latest groundbreaking product: the Sycamore. This micro-fidelity audio product represents a major innovation in the field of miniature speakers, combining high-performance sound with ultra-thin design.
Revolutionary Design for a New Era of Portable Audio Devices
The xMEMS Sycamore is the world’s first full-frequency, all-silicon near-field micro speaker, designed to provide high-quality sound for compact mobile devices like OWS headphones, smartwatches, smart glasses, and AV/VR headsets. Using xMEMS "ultrasonic sound generation" platform, the 1mm-thick chip converts ultrasonic waves into full-frequency audio, delivering superior sound in a tiny form factor.
According to Mike Housholder, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at xMEMS, “With Sycamore, mobile electronics can achieve a slimmer, more stylish design without sacrificing rich, powerful sound. Whether it's deep bass or high treble, Sycamore outperforms traditional dynamic drivers, providing powerful full-frequency audio for smartwatches, smart glasses, and any other compact mobile device."
A New Standard for Compact, Open-Air Devices
Unlike the company's previous breakthrough product, the Cypress micro speaker—designed for active noise-canceling (ANC) in-ear headphones—the Sycamore is specifically built for open-type devices. It replaces the traditional 3mm-thick dynamic drivers with an ultra-thin 1mm design, requiring significantly less rear cavity space. This enables device designers to overcome the limitations typically associated with ultra-slim mobile electronics.
The Sycamore offers improved low and mid-frequency performance with a dynamic range of up to 11dB in sub-bass, and a remarkable 15dB boost above 5kHz compared to traditional dynamic drivers. This makes it an ideal replacement for near-field high-frequency speakers in laptops, car audio systems, and portable Bluetooth speakers.
Mike Housholder notes, "The application possibilities for Sycamore are only limited by designers' imagination. In smartphones, it can serve as a high-quality earpiece, enhancing call clarity and privacy. In cars, its size and performance make it perfect for headrests, roof liners, and pillars. Additionally, Sycamore's exceptional sound allows for sleeker, more fashionable designs in smartwatches and glasses, appealing to modern consumers."
Ultra-Compact, Durable, and Suitable for Outdoor Use
At just 8.41 x 9 x 1.13 mm and weighing only 150 milligrams, the Sycamore is seven times smaller and one-third as thick as traditional dynamic speaker packages. This compact design makes it perfect for integration into smartwatches, smart glasses, and other increasingly slim electronic devices. As a solid-state, all-silicon micro speaker, Sycamore features an IP58 rating, making it rugged, sweat-resistant, and ideal for outdoor use.
Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Platform for Rapid Innovation
The Sycamore micro speaker is built using the same manufacturing process as the xMEMS’ Cypress in-ear ANC speaker and the innovative XMC-2400 micro cooling (µCooling) chip. This shared platform allows xMEMS to rapidly develop a range of different micro products, supporting fast innovation in a variety of mobile and wearable electronic applications.
