xMEMS introduces Sycamore, the world's first 1mm ultra-thin near-field full-frequency MEMS speaker

This µFidelity audio product represents another major innovation in MEMS speakers.

     Sycamore is the world's first full-frequency, all-silicon near-field MEMS speaker that delivers a full-frequency sound experience for open wireless stereo (OWS) earbuds, smartwatches, smart glasses, augmented/virtual reality headsets and other compact mobile electronics. Based on xMEMS's revolutionary "ultrasonic sound" platform, Sycamore can generate full-frequency sound through ultrasound with a chip as thin as 1 mm.


     "With Sycamore, mobile electronics can achieve slimmer, sleeker forms while maintaining strong, rich sound performance." "In both low and high frequency performance, Sycamore goes beyond traditional speakers to deliver powerful full-frequency sound for smartwatches, smart glasses and any other small mobile device," said Mike Housholder, vice president of marketing and business development at xMEMS.


     Unlike xMEMS 'pioneering Cypress miniature speakers, which provide full-frequency sound for in-ear active noise-cancelling earplugs, Sycamore is designed for open listening devices. Its ultra-thin 1mm thickness replaces the traditional 3mm thick moving coil speaker and occupies a smaller rear cavity space, breaking through the design limitations of ultra-thin mobile electronic devices.


     With its first-order low-frequency roll down, Sycamore can match the mid-low frequency performance of traditional speakers while providing up to 11dB of dynamic margin over sub-low frequency extension. In terms of high frequency performance, Sycamore outperforms conventional speakers by 15dB in bands above 5kHz, making it an ideal replacement for near-field treble units for laptops, in-car and portable Bluetooth speakers.


     "The application of MEMS speaker Sycamore is limited only by the designer's imagination." Housholder added. "In smartphones, Sycamore can be used as a higher quality handset speaker, leading to clearer calls and greater privacy. In the car, the size, weight and performance of the Sycamore make it a miniature tweeter unit for headrest, ceiling and post mounting. In smartwatches and glasses, Sycamore not only offers a complete sound experience, but its size allows designers to create slimmer, sleeker products that consumers love."


     Measuring just 8.41 mm x 9 mm x 1.13 mm and weighing just 150 mg, Sycamore is one-seventh the volume and one-third the thickness of traditional moving speaker packages, making it ideal for integration into increasingly thin electronic devices such as smartwatches and glasses. As an all-silicon solid-state MEMS speaker, Sycamore is IP58 rated, durable and sweat resistant, making it ideal for outdoor users.


     Sycamore uses the same manufacturing process as the Cypress in-ear ANC micro speaker and the pioneering XMC-2400 µCooling chip. Through a unified manufacturing platform, xMEMS is able to quickly launch a wide range of different micro piezoelectric MEMS products to support rapid innovation.
